The velvet curtains of the theatre, heavy with the scent of old dust and forgotten applause, seemed to cling to Stina Beana like a shroud. Tonight, the stage was not hers, yet the spotlight felt perpetually trained upon her, a silent interrogation. Her beauty, a weapon and a curse, drew gazes like moths to a flame, but behind the practiced smile, a war raged. The whispers had started again, not the hushed admiration of the crowd, but the insidious murmur of voices that only she could hear. They clawed at the edges of her consciousness, fragments of thought, shards of emotion, each a tiny, sharp shard of herself.

“They’re watching,” hissed a voice, sharp and brittle, like a snapped twig. It was Anya, the one who saw threats in every shadow, who lived on the precipice of panic. Stina’s fingers tightened around the stem of her champagne flute, the cold glass a small anchor in the swirling chaos.

“They always watch, Anya,” Stina thought back, her internal dialogue a silent ballet of warring factions. “It’s what they do.”
