Chapter 9
A Calculated Retreat
Mia engineers a situation to create distance, testing Nathaniel's resolve. She prepares for him to walk away, as everyone else has, but he patiently waits for her to return.
The chipped ceramic mug warmed my hands, a small comfort against the growing chill in my chest. Outside, the sky had deepened to a bruised twilight, mirroring the turmoil churning within me. I’d done it. I’d orchestrated a masterpiece of avoidance, a carefully planned retreat designed to push him away, to prove to myself, once and for all, that my cynicism was warranted. The more I’d analyzed Nathaniel, the more I’d seen the familiar glint of a temporary fixture, a bright spark that would inevitably flicker out. He hadn’t shown up at my door, that hopeful, persistent glimmer in his eyes replaced by the resigned disappointment I’d seen so many times before. Good. It was good. The familiar ache of anticipation, the one that always preceded the sting of abandonment, wasn't there. Instead, there was a hollow emptiness, a stark confirmation of my long-held beliefs.
