Testing the Foundation

The rain had been a steady, insistent drumbeat against the windowpanes all morning, mirroring the anxiety that had settled in my chest like a cold, damp stone. It had been three days since the argument, three days since I’d finally, irrevocably, driven Nathaniel away. Or so I’d told myself. This was the pattern. This was the dance. The closer we got, the more I’d find a reason to pull back, to create distance, to make sure the inevitable departure wouldn’t sting quite so much. And this time, the reason had been a doozy.

He’d been talking about his sister’s wedding, a whole weekend trip, out of state. He’d been excited, planning details, and I’d just… shut down. The words had tumbled out before I could stop them, sharp and ugly. “You’ll just leave, won’t you? Like everyone else. You’ll get busy, you’ll meet someone else, you’ll just… go.” The accusation hung in the air, heavy with all the unspoken fears I’d carried for years. He’d looked at me, his eyes, usually so full of warmth, clouded with a confusion that cut me deeper than any anger could have. He’d opened his mouth to speak, and I’d just turned away, unable to bear the hurt I was sure to see there. I’d expected him to leave then, to walk out the door and into the rain, to confirm every single one of my deeply held beliefs. But he hadn’t. He’d just stood there, silent, before quietly closing the door behind him.

And now, three days later, the rain was still falling. I’d been living in a strange, muted reality. I’d gone to work, I’d made polite conversation, I’d even managed a weak smile at Mrs. Gable when she asked about Nathaniel. But beneath the surface, I was a tightly wound spring, waiting for the inevitable snap. I’d braced myself for the phone call, the text message, the definitive end. But it hadn’t come. Instead, there was just the silence, the rain, and the gnawing emptiness where his presence used to be.
