The air in my small apartment felt different after Nathaniel left that night. It wasn’t just the lingering scent of his cologne, a mix of sandalwood and something unexpectedly like old books, but a subtle shift in the atmosphere, as if the walls themselves had exhaled a little. I stood by the window, tracing the condensation with a fingertip, watching the city lights blur into soft, impressionistic strokes against the inky sky. He had stayed. He had actually *stayed*.

It wasn’t the first time, not technically. He’d stayed through dinner, through our awkward conversation that had somehow morphed into genuine laughter, through my stilted attempts to steer the evening towards an early conclusion. But this was different. This was after he’d seen the frayed edges, the nervous tics, the way my voice had tightened when the topic of family had brushed too close to the open wound. He'd seen the carefully constructed facade begin to crumble, and instead of retreating, he’d leaned in, his gaze steady, his hand resting lightly on my arm, a silent anchor in the sudden storm of my own making.
