But he didn't leave.

My carefully constructed defenses, the ones I’d spent a lifetime reinforcing, felt like they were crumbling, not from an external assault, but from an internal implosion. It was the sheer, unadulterated shock of it. He was supposed to turn, to walk away, to add himself to the long, sad list of those who had promised and then vanished. Instead, he simply waited.
