Silas Vance’s office was a testament to his relentless ascent. Towering over the city’s glittering skyline, its polished chrome and obsidian surfaces reflected a universe of his own making. From his panoramic viewport, the ceaseless flow of starships along the Hyper Highways was a river of wealth, a river he intended to dam, divert, and ultimately own. He tapped a manicured finger against the cool glass, his gaze fixed not on the distant nebulae, but on the minuscule specks that represented independent haulers, those stubborn gnats buzzing around his carefully constructed empire.

“Admiral Hampton,” Vance murmured, the name tasting like grit on his tongue. It had been years since he’d last uttered it, years since he’d last felt the chilling authority of the man who had once held Vance’s career, and indeed his very life, in his palm. “He thinks he’s a hero,” Vance scoffed, a humorless smile playing on his lips. “Protecting the common man. How quaint. He fought to protect the Hyper Highways once. Now he’s a *trucker* protecting them. The irony is almost poetic.” He turned from the window, his sharp eyes settling on the holographic display projected onto his desk. A detailed schematic of the *Ironmule* flickered, overlaid with data streams detailing its recent, surprisingly successful, cargo runs.
