Maya experiences unsettling premonitions of danger on the Hyper Highways. She begins to suspect her latent psionic abilities are awakening, a power she fears and doesn't understand.
The hum of the TSV Ironmule was usually a comforting lullaby to Maya, a symphony of well-worn engines and humming life support that spoke of journeys completed and those yet to come. But lately, the familiar song had begun to warble, discordant notes creeping in like static on a broken comm channel. It started subtly, a prickle at the back of her neck, a sudden chill that had nothing to do with the ship’s climate control. She’d dismiss it as fatigue, the endless cycles of hyperlane navigation blurring into one another. But the feelings persisted, growing with an unsettling intensity.
She was charting a course through the Serpent’s Coil nebula, a notoriously tricky stretch of hyperlane known for its unpredictable gravimetric eddies. The star charts were clear, the navigational arrays functioning perfectly, yet a knot of unease tightened in her stomach. It felt like standing on the precipice of a great fall, a dizzying sensation that made her grip the console tighter.
"Everything alright, Maya?" Briggs’s gruff voice crackled over the internal comms, cutting through her spiraling thoughts. He was likely down in engineering, wrestling with some recalcitrant piece of machinery, his usual domain.
