The hum of the Hyper Lanes was a lullaby now, a far cry from the jarring blare of klaxons that had once defined Fleet Admiral Hampton’s existence. The TSV Ironmule, his once-forgotten rust bucket, now felt more like a throne. From its worn captain’s chair, his gaze swept over the endless ribbon of light stretching out before them, a testament to the freedom he had fought to preserve. The disgrace that had clung to him like space dust for so long had finally been scrubbed away, replaced by a quiet respect that echoed through the vast network of independent haulers.

“Anything on the long-range, Maya?” Hampton’s voice was a low rumble, comfortable in its new cadence.

Maya, perched at her comms station, her fingers dancing across the holographic interface, glanced up. Her usual bright optimism was softened by a serene contentment. “Just the usual chatter, Captain. Mostly reports of clear lanes, a few minor delays on the Orion Spur. Nothing that needs our particular brand of… persuasion.” She winked, a gesture that still held a touch of the youthful exuberance Hampton had first seen in her.
