The void shimmered, not with the usual star-dusted tapestry of the Hyper Highways, but with the sickly, pulsating glow of OmniCorp’s warship engines. Ahead, the cobbled-together fleet of independent haulers, a motley collection of rust buckets and repurposed freighters, formed a desperate, defiant line. Behind them, the TSV Ironmule, a veteran of countless forgotten wars and even more forgotten hauls, sat like a stubborn boulder in a rushing river.
“They’re closing in, Captain,” Maya’s voice, usually a beacon of calm, was tight with strain. Her fingers danced across the console, tracing the approaching enemy vectors. “OmniCorp cruisers. Three of them. And a swarm of fighters.”
Hampton stood on the bridge of the Ironmule, his gaze fixed on the tactical display. The faces of his crew, etched with a mixture of grim determination and raw fear, were a testament to the impossible odds they faced. Briggs, his knuckles white as he gripped the engineer’s station, muttered curses under his breath. Jax, the hulking brute who served as their muscle and occasional gunner, flexed his massive hands, his eyes scanning the viewport for any sign of incoming ordnance.
