The hum of the Ironmule’s engines had always been a low, comforting thrum to Hampton, a steady heartbeat against the vast silence of the void. But tonight, the thrum was ragged, laced with a new, unsettling vibration that echoed the gnawing unease in his gut. Maya’s voice, usually as clear and bright as a newly polished viewport, crackled with static and a tightness that spoke of distress.
“Captain… it’s bad. Really bad.”
Hampton leaned closer to the comms panel, his grizzled features etched with concern. “Report, Maya. What are you seeing?”
