It was a scent that clawed at Brittney’s senses, a constant reminder of the woman who had so smoothly slotted herself into her mother’s place, and into the precarious life Brittney was desperately trying to dismantle from the inside.
She paused outside the study, her hand hovering over the ornate brass handle. Inside, her father would be poring over ledgers, his brow furrowed in that familiar, imposing way. Eleanor, no doubt, would be by his side, a picture of devoted domesticity, her smile a silken trap. Brittney took a deep, steadying breath, the practiced calm of a seasoned operative settling over her like a second skin. This was it. The moment of no return.
She pushed the door open, her entrance deliberately jarring. Marcus Harper looked up, his expression hardening almost instantly at the sight of her. Eleanor, seated gracefully on a plush armchair, offered a small, almost pitying smile that did nothing to soften the sharp glint in her eyes.
