Maya’s fingers danced across the keyboard, a silent ballet of clicks and keystrokes that echoed the frantic rhythm of Kira’s heart. The attic’s musty air, once a repository of forgotten memories, now hummed with the urgent energy of their present crisis. Dust motes, illuminated by the single bare bulb, swirled like tiny, lost constellations in the beam of Leo’s focused flashlight, which he’d repurposed to cast a brighter, more concentrated light onto the laptop screen. Kira sat beside Maya, her gaze flitting between the glowing letters on the screen and the faded, poetic scrawls scattered on the floor around them. Each verse was a breadcrumb, a whispered promise from a future that felt both impossibly distant and terrifyingly close.

“Anything?” Kira finally breathed, the word a fragile wisp in the charged silence.

Maya’s brow furrowed, a faint crease appearing between her eyes. “It’s… odd. This Dr. Aris Thorne. He’s brilliant, undeniably. A pioneer in quantum mechanics and advanced AI. His early work was revolutionary, the kind of stuff that theoretically could pave the way for… well, for what we’re talking about.” She gestured vaguely towards the scattered poems, a silent acknowledgment of their improbable reality. “But then, about ten years ago, he just… vanished from public life. Went dark. And the research papers that did surface from his private labs? They’re sterile. Utterly devoid of anything resembling… imagination.”
