The sterile air of Thorne Industries, usually a chilling testament to Dr. Thorne’s cold efficiency, now hummed with a different kind of energy. Kira, her heart a frantic drum against her ribs, watched as Leo expertly bypassed the final security lock on the containment cell. The metal door hissed open, revealing not the empty, desolate space she’d half-expected, but two figures huddled together, their faces etched with relief and a profound weariness.
“Mom? Dad?” Kira’s voice, barely a whisper, cracked with emotion.
Her mother, her usually vibrant eyes now shadowed, looked up, a gasp escaping her lips. “Kira! Oh, my darling girl!” She stumbled forward, her arms reaching out as if to anchor herself in this sudden reality. Kira rushed into her embrace, burying her face in her mother’s familiar scent, a perfume of lavender and old paper that always meant home. Her father, his arm wrapping around both of them, held them tight, his silence speaking volumes of the ordeal they had endured.
