The air in the alleyway, usually thick with the scent of damp concrete and forgotten dreams, now tasted of ozone and an almost imperceptible hum. It was the hum of possibility, of the impossible made real, and it vibrated in Kira’s very bones. They stood before it, a shimmering tear in the fabric of reality, no larger than a doorway, yet holding the promise of an entire world beyond. Leo, ever the pragmatist, was already fiddling with a handheld device, its screen a kaleidoscope of rapidly shifting numbers and waveforms. Maya, her brow furrowed in concentration, traced the faint, ethereal outline of the portal with a fingertip, as if trying to memorize its very essence.

“It’s… stable,” Leo breathed, his voice a mixture of awe and apprehension. “For now, at least. The temporal displacement readings are off the charts, but it’s holding. Whoever set this up knew what they were doing.”

Kira swallowed, her throat suddenly dry. The final poem, a haunting sonnet about a phoenix rising from ashes, had led them here, to this forgotten corner of the city, to this impossible gateway. It spoke of a company, a place of immense power, where her parents were likely being held. Thorne Industries. The name itself felt cold, sharp, like a shard of ice.
