The shimmering portal deposited them not with a crash, but with a gentle sigh, like a breath exhaled into the crisp, unfamiliar air of what was, to Kira, both the past and the future. 2027. It hung in the atmosphere, a subtle shift in the hum of the city, a different scent on the breeze – cleaner, somehow, with a faint metallic tang that spoke of progress. They stood in an alleyway, the same grimy brickwork as the one they’d left, yet somehow… sleeker. The graffiti, instead of crude spray paint, seemed to glow with an internal light, shifting patterns like digital art.
Leo, ever the pragmatist, immediately pulled out a device that looked suspiciously like a souped-up smartphone, its screen a cascade of unfamiliar symbols. “Okay, initial atmospheric readings are nominal. No immediate temporal displacement sickness. But the ambient energy signatures… whoa. This is way beyond what I was expecting for 2027.” He tapped furiously, his brow furrowed in concentration.
Maya, her eyes wide, scanned their surroundings. “It’s… quieter. And yet, more alive. Look at the drones, Kira. They’re so small, so swift. And the advertisements… they’re not on screens, they’re projected directly onto the air.” Indeed, ethereal images of impossibly perfect products flickered and danced before their eyes, dissolving as quickly as they appeared.
