The scent of damp earth and something sweet, almost intoxicating, pulled me from my doze. It wasn't the usual musty aroma of the house, nor the faint, lingering perfume of past ladies. This was alive, verdant, a secret garden blooming in the heart of winter. I found myself standing not in the dusty hallway, but on a worn flagstone path, dappled sunlight warming my face.
