The air in the conservatory, once heavy with the phantom scent of roses and the memory of rain, now held a different kind of chill. It was a cold that seeped into bone, not the sharp bite of winter but a cloying, pervasive dampness that seemed to leech the very color from the world. Eleanor noticed it first in the wilting leaves of the potted ferns, their vibrant green fading to a sickly, almost translucent hue. The sunlight, when it managed to pierce the grimy panes, fell in weak, watery shafts, illuminating dust motes that swirled like tiny, lost souls. It wasn’t the warm, life-giving light of the sun; it felt like a pale imitation, a vampiric echo of warmth. She looked at her hands, expecting to see them pale and drained, but they were her own, flesh and blood, though a shiver traced its way down her spine. The house, she realized with a growing unease, was not merely holding onto the past; it was feeding on the present. It was a beautiful, decaying maw, its silence not a peaceful slumber but a hungry anticipation. The pinks of the peeling wallpaper seemed less rosy and more the bruised, faded blush of a long-ago sunset, and the once-vibrant reds of the velvet cushions were now a muted, dusty rose, as if the very life had been siphoned away. This was not twilight; this was something colder, something that promised not rest, but an eternal, bloodless stillness.
