The key, still cool against Eleanor’s palm, felt less like an inheritance and more like a tether. She stood at the foot of the grand staircase, the same one she’d climbed countless times in her journey through the Vance mansion’s past. But this time, it wasn't the spectral figures or the phantom scents that held her attention. It was the silence. A profound, almost expectant silence that had settled over the house since she’d painted Agnes’s unfinished song into completion. The air, once thick with the clamor of a hundred echoing lives, now felt curiously still, as if the house itself was holding its breath.
She ascended, each step a familiar greeting from the polished wood. The landing, where she’d once glimpsed laughing children, was now bathed in a soft, ordinary afternoon light. Reaching the attic studio, Eleanor paused. Agnes’s canvases were still there, the unfinished portraits and landscapes bathed in the same gentle light. But the portrait that had once watched her with such sorrow now seemed serene, its painted eyes holding a quiet peace. Eleanor ran a hand over the smooth, cool wood of the easel, a sense of gratitude warming her. She had listened. She had understood. And in doing so, she had helped set a soul free.
