Chapter 20
The Stairway's Farewell
With a final, lingering look, Eleanor descends the grand staircase. The echoes fade, but the memories remain, a part of her now, as she steps into her own future.
The finality of it settled over me like a velvet cloak, heavy with the scent of aged paper and dried lavender. Each step down the grand staircase felt like a gentle unmooring, a slow release from a dream I’d inhabited for too long. There was a profound sadness in this goodbye, a pang of loss for the lives I had touched, for the stories that had become so intimately mine. Yet, beneath that sadness was a burgeoning sense of peace, a quiet joy that bloomed like a hardy rose in unexpected soil. I had learned. I had seen. And I had, in my own way, loved them all.
