The scent of turpentine and linseed oil, once a whisper in the air of my studio, now felt like a roar, a vibrant announcement of my purpose. I’d spent days, maybe weeks, lost in the dusty quiet of Agnes’s former room, surrounded by her spectral presence. The house, usually a symphony of creaks and sighs, had held its breath, a silent audience to my growing desperation. I knew, with a certainty that settled deep in my bones, that Agnes Blackwood’s story was the one that clung to me, the one that the house seemed to nudge me towards with every passing shadow.

Her unfinished canvases, her scattered sketches, they spoke of a passion that had been cruelly silenced. I painted the gnarled branches of the old oak tree, its silhouette stark against a sky heavy with unspoken grief. I layered the paint, trying to imbue each stroke with the empathy I felt, with the understanding I desperately wanted to offer.
