The gardener’s words, spoken with such quiet gravity, had settled in my mind like a seed. *“There are gifts buried deep, miss. Not all of them are meant for the eye.”* I’d mulled them over as I dusted the worn velvet of the library chairs, the faint scent of old paper and beeswax a comforting presence. Gifts buried deep. The phrase echoed the very nature of this house, a place where the past seemed to be layered beneath every floorboard, every peeling wallpaper seam.

He had gestured vaguely towards the west wing, his gaze distant, as if seeing something far beyond the overgrown rose bushes he so meticulously tended. I’d thanked him, my heart thrumming with a familiar anticipation, the kind that always seemed to prickle my skin when the house offered a new mystery.

Later that afternoon, armed with a flickering candle and a growing sense of purpose, I ventured into the west wing. It was the oldest part of the house, its air thick with a stillness that felt older than time itself. Dust motes danced in the narrow shafts of light that pierced the gloom, illuminating forgotten corners where shadows clung like cobwebs. I ran my fingers along the ornate wainscoting, searching for any irregularity, any hint of a hidden latch or a loose panel. The wood was cool beneath my touch, smooth and polished by the passage of countless hands.
