The air in the west wing always felt thicker, heavier, as if it held its breath. Today, it was particularly so, a tangible weight pressing against my chest as I climbed the narrow servants’ stairs, a route I’d only recently discovered. Dust motes danced in the slivers of light that pierced the gloom, each one a tiny, forgotten universe. I was drawn to this part of the house, a place that felt less refined, more raw, where the echoes seemed to hum with a different kind of energy.
I found myself in a small, sparsely furnished room, meant for a seamstress or perhaps a lady’s maid, I imagined. A faded chintz armchair sat by the window, its fabric worn smooth by countless hours of waiting or watching. And then, I saw it. Not a clear image, not a solid form, but a shimmer, a ripple in the very air, coalescing into two figures.
Agnes. And a man. His face was indistinct, a blur of shadows and sharp angles, but his posture spoke volumes. He was agitated, his hands gesticulating wildly, his voice a low, urgent rumble that vibrated through the floorboards beneath my feet. Agnes stood before him, her usual vibrant aura muted, her shoulders slumped, but her eyes, even in this spectral form, burned with a fierce, wounded light.
