The house seems to resist her attempts to uncover Agnes's story. Doors creak shut, drafts chill the air, and faint whispers urge her to stop.
The mahogany banister of the grand staircase, usually smooth and cool beneath my hand, felt strangely resistant today, almost like it was pushing back. I’d been drawn to Agnes’s story like a moth to a flickering flame, her vibrant, melancholic spirit a constant hum beneath the surface of my days in this old house. But lately, the house itself seemed to be murmuring a different tune, a subtle, unsettling melody of dissent.
I’d found myself back in the dusty attic, Agnes’s sketchbook open before me, the vibrant hues of her unfinished painting still glowing with an almost defiant life. The scene depicted was of a wild, tempestuous sea, the waves crashing against jagged rocks, a solitary lighthouse struggling against the gale. It was powerful, raw, and unlike anything else in the collection of delicate watercolors and serene landscapes I’d found so far. It felt like a desperate cry, a visual shout into the void.
As I traced the bold strokes of her brush, a sudden gust of wind, far too strong for the sealed attic window, swept through the room. It wasn’t a gentle breeze; it was a forceful shove, rattling the stored furniture and sending a cascade of loose papers skittering across the floor. The sketchbook slammed shut with a sharp crack, and the air grew heavy, thick with an almost palpable disapproval. I shivered, though the attic was far from cold. It felt like a warning.
