The air in the small, cluttered room felt thick with the scent of old paper and dried ink. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating stacks of books that threatened to spill from their shelves. This was Mr. Silas Croft’s domain, a place where history wasn't merely read, but breathed. I’d found him through a hushed mention at the tiny post office, a man who “knew things” about the old places in town.

He was a small man, with wispy white hair that seemed to have a life of its own, escaping in all directions from his scalp. His eyes, magnified behind thick spectacles, were a startlingly bright blue, like chips of summer sky in a weathered face. He’d greeted me with a nod, his movements precise and economical, as if every gesture had been rehearsed a thousand times.

“Miss Vance,” he’d said, his voice a dry rustle, like turning the brittle pages of a forgotten diary. “A pleasure. I’ve been expecting you, in a manner of speaking.”
