The air, thick and humming with the silent song of forgotten things, pressed in on me. I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to banish the image of that shifting, inky shape clawing its way up the stairs behind me. Each thudding step it took sent a shiver through my bones, a tremor that felt less like fear and more like a recognition of something I’d tried so hard to bury. My breath hitched, a ragged sound in the echoing silence. I was trapped, caught between the vibrant, dizzying colors of these strange rooms and the suffocating darkness that pursued me.

Suddenly, a voice, like the rustle of dry leaves and the murmur of ancient rivers, cut through my panic. "Elara."

I gasped, my eyes snapping open. There, perched on the banister of the glowing staircase, was Whisper. His fur, the color of moonlight on old parchment, seemed to absorb the staircase’s ethereal light. His eyes, like polished obsidian, held a depth that swallowed me whole.
