The higher Elara climbs, the heavier the air becomes. The staircase seems to stretch endlessly, each landing a reminder of choices and moments she’d rather forget.
The air grew thick and heavy, like trying to swim through honey. Each step I took felt like pushing through a syrup-filled dream, and the glowing stairs beneath my bare feet seemed to stretch not just upwards, but inwards, too, pulling at me with a strange, insistent tug. The colors, once so vibrant and exciting, now pulsed with a frantic, almost desperate energy, the purples bleeding into angry reds, the blues darkening to bruised indigos. It was like the whole staircase was holding its breath, waiting for something.
I glanced back, a shiver tracing its way up my spine. The Shadow of Regret was gaining. It wasn't just a shape anymore; it was a swirling vortex of darkness, tendrils of inky blackness lashing out, trying to ensnare me. I could almost hear it whisper, a low, guttural sound that scraped against my ears, filled with a chilling sadness. It was the sound of things I’d tried so hard to bury, the echoes of laughter that had turned to sobs, the imagined triumphs that had crumbled into dust.
This was no longer a game of discovery. This was a chase, and the prize for the Shadow was me.
