The Echo of Courage

The sunlight felt like a warm hug on my face, chasing away the last lingering tendrils of the strange, shadowy chill. I blinked, and the familiar pattern of my bedroom ceiling swam into focus. For a moment, just a fleeting, heart-stopping moment, I thought I might have dreamt the whole thing – the glowing stairs, the echoing rooms, the terrifying chase. But then, a small, bright feather, the colour of a sunset I’d only seen in one of those forgotten rooms, fluttered from my pocket and landed on my pillow. It wasn't a dream.
My heart still thrummed a little faster than usual, a leftover echo of the fear that had propelled me upwards. But beneath the fear, something new had settled. It was a quiet strength, a steady hum that vibrated deep in my chest. Whisper’s words, usually so tangled and mysterious, now felt clear as a bell: "The greatest courage is not in running, little acorn, but in turning to face the storm." I had faced the storm. I had faced the Shadow. And it hadn't consumed me. It had… dissolved.
I sat up, my legs a little shaky, and swung them over the side of the bed. The floorboards felt solid, real. The air smelled of clean laundry and the faint, sweet scent of the honeysuckle that climbed our fence. Everything was as it should be. But I wasn't quite the same Elara who had fallen asleep.
