She sits up, feeling lighter, changed. The memories are still there, but no longer hold power over her. The adventure has brought a profound sense of peace.
The sunlight, warm and golden, spilled across my eyelids, coaxing me from a sleep that felt both deep and strangely light. I blinked, the familiar patterns of my bedroom ceiling slowly coming into focus. It was real. The sunshine, the soft quilt pulled up to my chin, the gentle hum of the world outside my window – all reassuringly *normal*. But I wasn't the same Elara who had tumbled into the dizzying, glowing descent yesterday. A profound lightness settled in my chest, like a balloon that had finally been let go, soaring into the vast blue. The adventure, the terrifying chase, the dusty rooms filled with phantom laughter – it had all happened, and yet, it felt like a dream I’d woken from, not to darkness, but to a brand new day.
I sat up, the movement fluid and easy. My limbs didn't ache with the phantom exhaustion of climbing endless stairs. I remembered Whisper, the wise old squirrel, his fur the color of ancient bark, his eyes holding the wisdom of forgotten ages. He hadn’t given me a magic spell or a secret weapon. He had given me a truth, simple and profound: the stairs didn’t lead to places I *had* to forget, but to places I *had* forgotten. And the shadow wasn't an external monster, but a tangled knot of my own making. “The unremembered,” he’d chittered, his voice like dry leaves skittering across stone, “is only unremembered until you choose to remember it. And to remember is to release.”
