The Gentle Awakening

Elara finds herself back in her own bed. Sunlight streams through the window, warm and real, chasing away the last vestiges of the staircase's strange glow.

The first thing I noticed was the warmth. Not the clammy, electric heat of the glowing stairs, but a soft, sun-baked warmth that seeped into my skin like honey. My eyelids fluttered open, and a gasp escaped my lips. Sunlight, real, golden, and utterly familiar, streamed through my bedroom window, painting stripes across my quilt. My quilt! The one with the faded blue rockets and the slightly frayed edges. I was in my bed. My own bed. The scent of toast, faint and comforting, drifted from downstairs.

Panic, a cold, sharp thing, tried to claw its way up my throat, but it felt distant, muffled, like a memory of a bad dream. The staircase. The Shadow. Whisper. Had it all been… a dream? I sat up, my heart thumping a frantic rhythm against my ribs. The room was exactly as I’d left it, or rather, as I remembered leaving it. My worn teddy bear, Barnaby, sat propped against my pillow, his button eyes staring blankly ahead. My collection of smooth, grey stones, gathered from the beach last summer, were neatly arranged on my windowsill. Everything was ordinary. Wholly, wonderfully ordinary.

But the feeling lingered. The echo of the winding stairs, the dizzying descent, the chilling presence of the Shadow. It wasn't just a dream. It was too vivid, too real, too… *me*. I swung my legs out of bed, my feet sinking into the familiar softness of my rug. My toes curled, as if searching for the cool, smooth stone of the unremembered path.
