Chapter 15
The Final Step Down
Elara reaches the bottom of the glowing staircase. The entrance back to her world is clear, bathed in soft, inviting light, a stark contrast to the depths she's traversed.
The last step was almost anticlimactic. It wasn't a grand finale, no dramatic flourish of ethereal light or a final, terrifying roar from the Shadow of Regret. Instead, it was just… a step. My worn sneaker landed on solid ground, the kind of ground I knew, the kind that didn't hum with residual magic or shimmer with the dust of forgotten dreams. The glowing staircase, which had been my world for what felt like an eternity, simply ended. Before me, where the last step met the floor, was an archway, not of stone or shadow, but of pure, warm sunlight. It beckoned, a promise of the ordinary, of waking up and brushing my teeth and having breakfast.
I turned, my heart still thrumming a frantic rhythm against my ribs, expecting the Shadow to be right there, a dark, swirling vortex of my own making. But there was nothing. The staircase behind me, so vibrant and alive moments ago, was now just… gone. The faint, almost imperceptible hum of its energy had faded, leaving behind a silence that was both a relief and a little bit startling. It was as if the entire adventure, the chase, the rooms filled with the laughter of games I barely remembered, the chilling presence of the Shadow, had been a dream within a dream. But the echo of Whisper’s voice, the weight of his words about understanding and forgiveness, felt too real for that.
The sunlight spilling through the archway was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. It painted the dusty floor with streaks of gold, chasing away the lingering shadows that clung to my periphery. I took a tentative step towards it, my legs feeling a little wobbly, as if I’d been running for miles. And I had been, in a way. Running from myself, from the mistake that had festered in the hidden corners of my mind, growing into the monstrous Shadow that had hunted me up those impossible stairs.
