The air thrummed with a new kind of quiet, not the hushed anticipation of before, but a deep, resonant peace. It settled over me like a warm blanket, chasing away the last tendrils of fear that had clung to me like cobwebs. I looked down at my hands, half expecting them to shimmer with the same ethereal glow as the staircase, but they were just my hands, small and a little grubby from climbing. The Shadow of Regret, that swirling vortex of dark energy that had huffed and puffed its way up behind me, seemed to falter, its edges softening like a melting candle.
"It's not an enemy," I whispered, the words feeling strangely right, like a key turning in a lock. "It's just… sad."
Whisper, perched on a railing that hadn't been there a moment ago, his whiskers twitching with what looked like a smile, nodded slowly. "Sadness, child, is a powerful thing. It can build walls or it can pave the way." His voice, usually a low rumble, was now as gentle as a summer breeze. "And sometimes, the heaviest burdens are the ones we carry for ourselves."
