The air, thick and humming with the colors that had assaulted my eyes for what felt like an eternity, began to thin. It was like the world was taking a giant, shaky breath, and with it, some of the impossible vibrancy leached away. The throbbing crimson that had painted the walls of the staircase, the electric blue that had pulsed from the steps themselves, they softened. They didn’t disappear, not entirely, but they mellowed, like a sunset bleeding into twilight. And with the colors, the oppressive weight that had pressed down on my chest, the heavy blanket woven from fear and the Shadow’s cold breath, began to lift.

I looked down. The Shadow, that swirling mass of everything I’d tried to bury, was still there, a dark smudge at the edge of my vision, but it wasn’t lunging. It wasn’t a claw reaching for my ankle. It was… quieter. It rippled, yes, but it looked more like a sigh than a snarl. It was still made of regret, I could feel it, but it was a regret that was starting to understand. It was *my* regret, after all. And understanding, I was beginning to realize, was a powerful kind of light.

Whisper’s words echoed in my mind, not like a riddle anymore, but like a gentle truth. *“The stairs do not lead forward, child, but inward. And the only way out is to walk the path you’ve already trod, with open eyes.”* I had walked the path. I had seen the rooms, heard the echoes, felt the sting of what I’d hidden. And the Shadow… it was simply the ghost of that pain, clinging to me. But if I didn’t fear it anymore, if I could look at it and know it was just a part of me that had gotten lost, then maybe it couldn’t hold me captive.
