The air in the South Side always hung thick, a humid blanket woven with exhaust fumes, fried chicken grease, and something else, something metallic and sharp that prickled the back of your throat. It was the smell of survival, the scent of a city that didn’t care if you lived or died, only that you kept moving. And I, Dre, Tattedup Dre as some of ‘em called me, was moving. I was trying to outrun it all, this life that felt like quicksand, pulling me down with every desperate step. Chapter 5. Navigating Treacherous Waters. Felt like a damn understatement.
Red. Her name still tasted like ash on my tongue. She was the echo in the silence, the ghost in the machine of my life. Her disappearance, the way she just… vanished after that night, had left a gaping hole, a void that the city seemed eager to fill with its usual brand of chaos. I’d spent weeks chasing shadows, asking questions that led nowhere, to faces that offered only shrugs and averted gazes. Everyone knew something, or pretended to, but nobody was talking. Not to me, anyway. The whispers I did catch were like shards of glass – sharp, dangerous, and telling a story I didn't want to believe. A story that painted Red in a light that made my gut twist.
Tau’s voice, a steady beacon in the storm, had been my lifeline. His advice, delivered through crackling phone lines from behind bars, was like a map drawn by someone who’d already navigated these treacherous currents. “Dre, son,” he’d said, his voice rough but laced with a tenderness I’d rarely heard, “This life, it’ll chew you up and spit you out if you let it. You gotta be smarter than them streets. You gotta see the game before they even deal the cards.” He’d spoken of his own twenty-one years inside, of watching the world change from a concrete box, of regretting choices made in haste, in anger. His words were a stark warning, a plea wrapped in tough love.
