The static on the payphone crackled like dry leaves underfoot, a familiar soundtrack to my life on the South Side. Red had disappeared three days ago. Not a word, not a trace, just gone. And with her, a piece of the fragile peace I’d managed to cobble together. The weight of it pressed down on me, heavy as the humid August air. I’d been running on fumes, fueled by a gnawing anxiety and the lingering scent of her cheap perfume that still clung to my jacket. Every shadow seemed to lengthen, every siren wail felt like it was coming for me.
My fingers, stained with the grime of the streets, fumbled with the coins. I needed to hear a voice that wasn’t laced with suspicion or the promise of trouble. The operator’s clipped voice finally connected me. The line buzzed, a disembodied hum that vibrated in my chest. Then, a voice, deep and resonant, cut through the noise. It wasn’t the gravelly rasp of men who’d spent their lives on the outside. It was smoother, richer, like aged whiskey.
