Chapter 18
Chapter 19: The Threshold of Trust
Kathleen wakes from a vision of Yoshua's crucifixion, shaken and confused. David explains the vision's meaning, and they share a moment of vulnerability. Elara and Kaelen discuss the weave's instability, and the group decides to split: Elara and David will go north to mend the tear, while Kathleen stays to guard a wounded Kaelen. Kathleen wrestles with her fear of separation but ultimately trusts David's path.
The cold air bit at Kathleen's cheeks as she blinked against the gray dawn light filtering through the cabin's single window. Her breath came in short, ragged gasps, and her hands trembled against the wool blanket she had pulled up to her chin. The vision clung to her like frost on glass—Yoshua on that hill, the spikes, the crown of thorns, the mocking crowd. She could still hear the dull thud of the mallet, feel the weight of Mary's grief pressing against her chest.
She sat up slowly, her muscles aching as if she had been the one carrying that cross. The cabin was quiet except for the crackle of the fire and Kaelen's steady breathing from the corner where he lay, his bandaged arm resting across his chest. David was at the hearth, his back to her, feeding a fresh log into the flames.
"You're awake," he said without turning. His voice was low, careful, as if he had been expecting her to surface from a nightmare.
