The chill of the stone seeped into Mihnea’s bones, a familiar cold that mirrored the emptiness in his heart. He pressed a hand to the rough-hewn wall, the stone cool and unyielding, much like the fate that had befallen his father. If only Vlad, his formidable, brilliant father, had not loved him so fiercely. If that love had not tethered him to Wallachia, to the very land that had ultimately betrayed him, then perhaps… perhaps Mihnea would not be here, a prisoner of his own grief and a burning, all-consuming need for vengeance.

The whispers of his father’s execution echoed in the shadowed corridors of his mind, a constant, gnawing torment. The hand of his younger brother, Radu, stained with fratricide, guided by the treacherous whispers of the Ottomans, had brought down the dragon. The fury that had simmered within Mihnea since he had learned of the betrayal now boiled over, a tempest threatening to drown reason. Why had she been so frail? Why had they not kept her safely hidden, as his father had intended? But then, the ache in his chest tightened. He remembered her presence, her gentle smile, the warmth she brought to their secluded existence. A life of constant hiding had been her fate, and perhaps, he conceded with a pang of guilt, her presence had been a solace to their isolated hearts, a comfort he now desperately craved in his father’s memory.
