The air in the secluded chamber, usually thick with the scent of aged parchment and dried herbs, now carried a sharp, metallic tang. Mihnea knelt beside Ion, whose labored breaths were a grim counterpoint to the frantic scrabbling sounds from outside. The sounds of Boyar Dinu's men were closing in, their boots a drumbeat of impending doom on the cobblestones of the hidden courtyard. Ion, his face a mask of pain, clutched Mihnea’s arm, his grip surprisingly strong.

“The scrolls, Mihnea,” he rasped, his eyes, usually so steady, now clouded with urgency. “You must get the scrolls out. They are… they are everything.”

Mihnea’s gaze flickered to the heavy wooden chest, its lid ajar, revealing the tightly bound scrolls within. These were the fruits of his tireless labor, the testament to his father's true reign. They were the voices of the past, silenced for too long, now resurrected only to be threatened with annihilation once more. Anger, hot and fierce, coiled in his gut, a cold counterpoint to the fear that threatened to paralyze him. Vengeance, a concept he had long suppressed in his pursuit of truth, now burned with a raw, primal intensity. Ion’s suffering, the violation of this sanctuary, the impending destruction of his father’s legacy – it all coalesced into a single, searing desire.
