Christmas Wish List

The air in the house thickened with the scent of pine needles and cinnamon, a potent perfume that always signaled the approaching holidays. For him, though, the magic of Christmas wasn't found in the twinkling lights draped across the eaves or the carols echoing from the radio. It was in the quiet, fervent hopes whispered into the ear of a Santa Claus who, he was sure, had a special file dedicated to him and the red-haired girl. His Christmas wish list, scrawled in clumsy block letters on paper that crinkled with anticipation, was a testament to the singular focus of his young heart.

Beneath the heading, “Dear Santa,” the usual litany of toys and games was conspicuously absent. Instead, the first item, bolder and more prominent than the rest, read: "For the Red-Haired Girl to be happy." He stared at it, tracing the imperfect letters with a fingertip. It felt like the most important request he’d ever make, a plea that transcended the simple desires of childhood. He imagined her, unwrapping presents, her face alight with joy, and a warm, fuzzy feeling spread through his chest, a feeling he attributed solely to the spirit of giving.

Then came the more personal, more impossible wishes. "For me to get to go to her house." He chewed on his lip, remembering the firm "no" that always met any tentative suggestion of such a thing. Her parents, he’d gathered from overheard snippets and the general aura of impenetrable privacy that surrounded her family, were not the type to welcome a shy boy with a crush. And then there was her brother, a hulking presence he’d only glimpsed a few times, a shadow that seemed to loom larger than life, always ready to defend his sister’s territory with a glare that could freeze a summer day.
