Chapter 10
Twenty Years Gone
Time jump. The narrator is now an adult, reflecting on the passage of years since he last saw her. The memory remains vivid, despite the long absence.
The world had a way of spinning on, relentlessly. Twenty years. The number itself felt like a vast, empty field stretching out behind him, dotted with the fading, ghostly outlines of days he could barely recall with any clarity. Yet, some images, some feelings, were etched into the very fabric of his being, as if time itself had paused just for them. He’d tried, of course. In the early years, after the bus rides had ceased, after graduation had scattered everyone like dandelion seeds to the winds, he’d asked around. Vague recollections from old classmates, a shrug, a “moved away, I think.” No one seemed to recall her with the same intensity, the same burning curiosity that still flickered within him. She had been a fleeting, vibrant comet, and he, a grounded observer, forever gazing upward, tracing her trajectory.
