The wind, usually a playful companion, felt more like a taunting adversary that afternoon. Williyar, still grappling with the capricious nature of his new appendages, found himself battling a particularly gusty breeze that seemed determined to send him tumbling headfirst into Mrs. Higgins’ prize-winning petunias. He flapped, he wobbled, he overcorrected, all the while muttering frantic apologies to the universe and anyone who might be witnessing his aerial ineptitude. He’d been trying to achieve a graceful, soaring descent, a feat he’d only managed in his dreams, but reality, as always, was a far messier affair.

The balloon was moving erratically, a drunken giant in the sky, and it was heading directly towards the dense woods that bordered the park. A collective gasp rippled through the few people scattered on the grass below. Williyar’s heart hammered against his ribs. He knew, with a certainty that surprised him, that these weren’t just any children. They were *his* town’s children, likely on an outing from the local school, a fact he deduced from the distinctive blue and yellow uniforms he recognized.
