The crisp morning air of Oakhaven usually carried the scent of dew-kissed grass and freshly baked bread from Mrs. Gable’s bakery. But today, it also carried a faint, bewildered squeak. Williyar, still wrestling with the recalcitrant appendages strapped to his back, was attempting to master the art of a graceful descent from his bedroom window. The wings, a marvel of gleaming chrome and iridescent feathers, had a mind of their own, and currently, that mind seemed to be fixated on a rather ungraceful trajectory towards Mr. Henderson’s prize-winning petunias.

“Whoa, whoa, easy there!” Williyar muttered, his voice a nervous flutter. He flapped his arms in a desperate attempt to regain some semblance of control, a movement that only seemed to encourage the wings to perform a particularly enthusiastic jig. He felt a familiar blush creep up his neck as he pictured the inevitable lecture from his mother about respecting Mr. Henderson’s horticultural efforts.

Just as he braced himself for a leafy impact, a gust of wind, far more powerful and purposeful than any natural breeze, swooped beneath him. It wasn’t a gentle lift; it was an audacious snatch. Williyar yelped, his descent arrested, and then, with a whoosh that ruffled his already disheveled hair, he was propelled upwards, not towards the petunias, but towards the boundless blue.
