Chapter 19
A Hero's Landing
Williyar uses his wings for a selfless act, perhaps aiding someone in distress. His landing is precise, a far cry from his wobbly beginnings.
The afternoon sun cast long, lazy shadows across the park, painting the grass in hues of gold and emerald. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves, carrying with it the distant laughter of children and the faint scent of freshly mown grass. Williyar, wings folded neatly against his back, sat on a park bench, a book open in his lap, though his eyes weren’t truly seeing the words. He was watching a group of children playing tag, their movements quick and uninhibited, a stark contrast to his own often-stilted grace.
He still marveled at the wings, even after all this time. They were magnificent, feathered in a way that shimmered with an iridescent sheen, catching the light like a thousand tiny prisms. They felt like a part of him now, an extension of his will, though the initial months had been a flurry of flailing limbs and undignified tumbles. He remembered the sheer terror of his first flight, the panic that had seized him as he spiraled uncontrollably towards a particularly thorny rose bush. Now, however, there was a quiet confidence that settled in his chest whenever he thought of them.
A small, distressed cry broke through his reverie. He looked up, his gaze scanning the park. Near the edge of the trees, a little girl, no older than five, was clutching her knee, tears streaming down her face. Her friends had continued their game, oblivious to her plight. Williyar’s heart gave a familiar pang of sympathy. He stood, the book forgotten, and approached her.
