The wind whipped Williyar’s hair across his face, a frantic, uninvited guest. Below, the panicked shouts of children were a fragile thread against the roaring expanse of air. The wicker basket of the hot air balloon, usually a symbol of gentle, leisurely ascent, was now a bucking bronco, careening wildly with a rogue gust. Its pilot, a portly man with a face the colour of a bruised plum, flailed uselessly at the controls, his curses swallowed by the gale.

Williyar, still clinging precariously to his own rapidly flapping wings, felt a cold dread seize him. This was precisely the kind of chaotic, uncontrolled descent he’d been trying so desperately to avoid. But this wasn’t just his own impending embarrassment; this was a basket full of giggling, now terrified, youngsters. Their tiny hands clutched the sides of the basket, their wide eyes reflecting the dizzying, terrifying spectacle of their uncontrolled flight.

He’d been practicing his evasive maneuvers, a pathetic, wobbly attempt to out-fly a particularly aggressive pigeon, when the balloon had veered into his path. Now, the pigeon was long gone, a distant memory compared to the immediate, overwhelming threat. The balloon, a giant, colourful blob, was listing drunkenly, its burner sputtering erratically, adding a layer of infernal heat to the already perilous situation.
