Episode 88

The air in the station was always a symphony of subtle sounds: the low hum of the refrigerator, the distant clang of metal as equipment was checked, the murmur of conversations that ebbed and flowed like a tide. But lately, for Sarah, a new sound had joined the chorus – the almost imperceptible thrum of her own pulse whenever Jake Riley was near. It had been weeks since the wildfire, weeks of returning to the routine, to the drills, to the quiet hours punctuated by the wail of a distant siren. The wildfire had been a crucible, forging a connection between them that was undeniable, a heat that had flared and then settled into a smoldering ember.

It made her muscles ache with a different kind of exertion, a yearning that had nothing to do with fighting fires.

"Jenkins, keep that tension steady," Jake's voice was low, a rumble that vibrated through her. He was close, his broad shoulder almost touching hers as he guided the hose. The scent of him, a mixture of sweat, diesel, and something uniquely his, filled her senses. It was a scent that had become inextricably linked with adrenaline, with danger, and with a thrilling, forbidden desire.
