Episode 78

When Passion Explodes

3 min read

The air in the equipment room was thick, not just with the metallic tang of SCBA tanks and the faint, persistent scent of smoke that clung to everything, but with an almost tangible heat that had nothing to do with the malfunctioning ventilation system. Jake Riley’s broad back was pressed close to the wall as he wrestled with a stubborn regulator on Sarah Jenkins’s pack. Sarah, positioned opposite him, her lean frame taut with concentration, found it increasingly difficult to focus on the intricate mechanics of the gear. Each time their hands brushed as they reached for the same wrench, a jolt, sharp and electric, shot through her. Her breath hitched, a silent gasp lost in the hum of the room.

“Damn thing’s seized up,” Jake grunted, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through the space between them. The memory of his touch, the desperate urgency of it during the wildfire, flashed through her mind, a vivid counterpoint to the sterile efficiency of their current task.

Sarah swallowed, her throat suddenly dry. “Let me try,” she managed, her voice a little breathier than she intended. She reached for the regulator, her fingers brushing against his as she did. This time, the contact lingered, a deliberate, almost imperceptible pause. A tremor ran through her, and she saw Jake’s jaw tighten, his gaze flicking up to meet hers. In the dim light, his eyes, usually so controlled, held a raw intensity that mirrored the fire that had raged in her own veins.
