The engine coughed, a final, rattling gasp before settling into a low, steady hum. The adrenaline that had coursed through Sarah’s veins like wildfire began to recede, leaving behind a bone-deep exhaustion. Beside her, Jake’s broad back was still a solid presence, his shoulders rising and falling with each breath. The air, thick with the lingering scent of smoke and the metallic tang of sweat, felt heavy with unspoken words. They had survived. The immediate crisis had passed, but the heat of their shared experience, the raw intensity of their near-death encounter, still pulsed between them.

Jake turned, his gaze meeting Sarah’s. In the dim light of the engine bay, his eyes, usually so focused and commanding, held a vulnerability she hadn't seen before, a reflection of the fear and relief that mirrored her own. The professional distance that had always defined their interactions had been irrevocably blurred. He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently brushing a smudge of soot from her cheek. His touch, usually so purposeful, lingered for a moment, sending a tremor through her.

"You did good, Jenkins," he said, his voice rough, deeper than usual. It wasn't the perfunctory praise of a captain; it was something more, something personal.
