They stood in the apparatus bay, ostensibly reviewing the final checklist for the week's brush-up training. The polished chrome of the engine gleamed under the fluorescent lights, reflecting their figures – Jake, broad-shouldered and solid, his muscles still defined beneath his uniform, and Sarah, leaner but radiating a quiet strength that had blossomed under his watchful eye. Their hands had brushed a dozen times that morning, each fleeting contact sending a jolt of awareness through her, a silent acknowledgment of the fire that had ignited between them.

"All systems go, Captain," Sarah said, her voice a little huskier than usual. She kept her gaze fixed on the clipboard, her fingers tracing the lines of the report. The memory of his touch, the electric spark that had arced between them during the last equipment check, still lingered on her skin, a phantom sensation that made her breath hitch. She could feel his presence beside her, a solid, comforting weight that was also intensely, intoxicatingly distracting.
