The air in the firehouse, usually a comforting blend of diesel, leather, and faint exhaust, now carried a different scent. It was subtle, almost imperceptible to anyone not attuned to the intimate rhythm of the station, but for Jake, it was a constant, thrilling reminder. It was the scent of Sarah. Not the clean, sharp scent of her uniform or the faint floral notes of her shampoo, but something deeper, more primal – the lingering trace of her sweat, the warmth of her skin, the ghost of smoke that still clung to her gear from their last intense engagement.

He found himself unconsciously inhaling when she was near, a habit he’d developed since the wildfire, a habit that had begun as a professional acknowledgment of her resilience and had morphed into something far more personal, far more dangerous. Today, that danger felt like a delicious hum beneath the surface of his carefully maintained composure.

Sarah, too, was aware of it. She felt his gaze more often now, not the critical, assessing gaze of a captain during training, but something softer, warmer, tinged with a possessiveness that made her insides twist with a delicious ache. She’d caught him watching her earlier, during the routine gear check, his eyes lingering on the curve of her bicep as she tightened a strap, the determined set of her jaw as she focused. He hadn't said anything, of course. His professionalism was a well-worn, sturdy shield, but she saw the flicker of something more in his eyes, a recognition of the heat that had ignited between them, a heat that refused to be extinguished.
