Captain Jake Riley leaned against the gleaming red flank of Engine 3, his broad shoulders relaxed but his presence still commanding. He watched Sarah Jenkins across the apparatus bay, her movements fluid and confident as she meticulously checked the seals on a SCBA regulator. It had been weeks since the wildfire, weeks of returning to the routine, but the intensity of that experience, and the subsequent unfolding of their relationship, had left an indelible mark.

Sarah, no longer the wide-eyed rookie, moved with a practiced ease that spoke of both dedication and a newfound self-assurance. Her lean, muscular frame was a testament to her commitment, her muscles defined as she twisted the regulator into place. She caught Jake’s eye, and a subtle smile touched her lips, a private acknowledgment that still sent a thrill through him. He returned the smile, a warmth spreading through his chest that had nothing to do with the ambient temperature of the station.

“Everything shipshape, Jenkins?” Jake’s voice was a low rumble, carrying easily across the space.
