Sarah traced the condensation on her water bottle, her fingers cool against the plastic. The exhaustion of the past few days still clung to her, a heavy blanket, but beneath it, a new energy thrummed. Every glance from Jake, every casual brush of their hands as they moved through the station, felt charged, a private language spoken in hushed tones and lingering gazes. The professional distance they had once maintained felt like a relic of a distant past, replaced by a palpable yearning.

Jake leaned against a gleaming red engine, his arms crossed over his broad chest, muscles still defined even in repose. His eyes, usually sharp and focused on the task at hand, held a softer, more profound gaze when they landed on Sarah. He saw not just the capable EMT who had faced down a wildfire, but the woman who had ignited something within him, something fierce and undeniable.
